Hello everyone! I wanted to try something new for the holiday season, and since classic serials seem to do well on here, I thought I’d join the fun and make a literature club. I chose Little Women by Louisa May Alcott as our first title because the book begins on Christmas Eve, and ends on the following Christmas. Originally titled Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy, the story follows the plucky March sisters through various hardships (poverty, worries over an absent parent, interpersonal dramas, and illness). Despite that, the tone remains optimistic due to the perseverance and moral fortitude of our heroines.
First published in 1868, it provides a fascinating glimpse of New England domestic life during the American Civil War. It’s also considered semi-autobiographical since Louisa May Alcott based the characters on her own family. She even shared the same home with her fictional heroines. Orchard House is a museum in Concord, Massachusetts that you can actually visit. Here’s a trailer video from the documentary: Orchard House, Home of Little Women.
And now back to the details of the challenge…
